Module 9
Safe operation of rough terrain cranes

Prerequisite: Module 1: Fundaments of Rigging (by Schram Crane) MUST be successfully completed prior to taking this course.

DURATION: 8 HOURS

Chapter 1: Safe Operating Practices

• Be introduced to many of the technical aspects of crane work that effect safe operation.

• Address items such as the effect of load movement on stability and structural strength, the effect of off level operation, two blocking, and proper load handling and operation techniques for operators.

• Learn the rules and regulations for working with man baskets.

• Learn the rules and regulations regarding crane work in the proximity of power lines and be shown the inconsistencies of standards.

• Understand the magnitude of outrigger and track point loads and practice calculations that show the maximum ground point load possible with various cranes.

Chapter 2: Load Charts

• Learn basic terminology referring to crane load charts for all manufacturers.

• Learn how to properly understand the load charts for different manufacturers.

• Load chart problems and multiple different makes and models for a well-rounded understanding of different manufacturers.

Chapter 3: Crane Inspection / Pre-operation Checks

• Instruction on the most common sources of error on the part of the planner that may prevent a successful lift.

• Overview on proven, logical step by step method of planning critical lifts and be made aware of many of the outside pressures that can affect the safe outcome of the lift if not controlled by the lift manager.

• Overview of what technical areas of lift planning demand the full attention of the lift manager.

Dynamics of Lifts

• An introduction to the changing loads that are induced when handling loads with more than one crane.

• Awareness of when weight is transferred from one crane to another during the tailing process so that adequate surplus capacities can be assured.

• Little known examples of extreme loadings that can be placed on tail cranes are explained.

Final Exam

Crane Practical to follow final exam. The practical will include:

• Each operator must demonstrate safe set-up and break-down of Rough Terrain Cranes.

• Each operator must perform a load chart calculation for a lift they are to perform.

• Each operator must perform their lift and safe operation is to be graded by the instructor. Students will be given instruction and guidance to perform each task, however they must be able to complete these exercises and achieve a passing grade of 70% to pass. Certificates issued are valid for 3 years from the date of training.
