Safe operation of
pipe layers

Prerequisite: Module 1: Fundaments of Rigging (by Schram Crane) MUST be successfully completed prior to taking this course.

DURATION: 8 HOURS

Chapter 1: Safe Operating Practices

• Overview of ground bearing pressures created by knuckle booms and safe practices for set-up and operation.

• Overview of sideloading booms and improper operation.

• Review of knuckle boom incidents.

Chapter 2: Load Charts

• Learn basic terminology referring to crane load charts for all manufacturers.

• Learn how to properly understand the load charts for different manufacturers.

• Load chart problems and multiple different makes and models for a well-rounded understanding of different manufacturers.

Chapter 3: Safe Planning of Multi Boom Lifts

• Learn how to safely calculate the weight of pipe joints.

• Learn how to properly plan pipe lifts with multiple booms.

• Learn how to safely space booms to account for pipe deflection and capacity.

Chapter 3: Crane Inspection / Pre-operation Checks

• Review of critical components to check prior to operation and how to check them.

• Review of required documentation such as log books, current crane certification, etc.

Final Exam

Crane Practical to follow final exam. The practical will include:

• Each operator must demonstrate safe set-up and break-down of the knuckle boom

• Each operator must perform a load chart calculation for a lift they are to perform.

• Each operator must perform their lift and safe operation is to be graded by the instructor.

Students will be given instruction and guidance to perform each task, however they must be able to complete these exercises and achieve a passing grade of 70% to pass. Certificates issued are valid for 3 years from the date of training.
