Module 4
Safe operation of
complex mini cranes

Prerequisite: Module 1: Fundaments of Rigging (by Schram Crane) MUST be successfully completed prior to taking this course.

DURATION: 8 HOURS

Chapter 1: Safe Operating Practices

• The rule of thumb method for calculation of worst-case outrigger loadings is demonstrated.

• The dangers of off level operation are described and explored.

• Proper operation techniques are described.

• The proper planning that should go into a major rigging job is discussed and the way this planning affects safety is identified.

Chapter 2: Load Charts

• Learn basic terminology referring to crane load charts for all manufacturers.

• Learn how to properly understand the load charts for different manufacturers.

• Load chart problems and multiple different makes and models for a well-rounded understanding of different manufacturers.

Chapter 3: Crane Inspection / Pre-operation Checks

• Review of critical components to check prior to operation and how to check them.

• Review of required documentation such as log books, current crane certification, etc.

Final Exam

Crane Practical

The practical will include:

• Each operator must demonstrate safe set-up and break-down of Complex Mini Crane.

• Each operator must perform a load chart calculation for a lift they are to perform.

• Each operator must perform their lift and safe operation is to be graded by the instructor.

Students will be given instruction and guidance to perform each task, however they must be able to complete these exercises and achieve a passing grade of 70% to pass. Certificates issued are valid for 3 years from the date of training.
